How accurate are the sunrise and sunset times?
Times are accurate to within 1–2 minutes for most locations. The tool uses the same solar position algorithm as NOAA's online calculator, accounting for atmospheric refraction (-0.833° correction).
What is civil, nautical, and astronomical twilight?
Civil twilight ends when the sun is 6° below the horizon — still bright enough to see outdoor objects clearly. Nautical twilight ends at 12° — horizon just visible at sea. Astronomical twilight ends at 18° — sky is fully dark enough for observation.
Why does the UTC offset matter?
Sunrise and sunset are computed in UTC (universal time) and then shifted by your UTC offset to give local time. Make sure to account for daylight saving time (e.g. use +5:30 for IST, +1 for CET, +8 for CST).
Does it work near the poles?
The tool will show '—' for times that don't exist — for example, during midnight sun in summer or polar night in winter, the sun may never rise or set.
