What Is a Unit Price Calculator?
A unit price calculator tells you the cost per single unit of a product — per gram, per kilogram, per millilitre, per item — so you can compare two different pack sizes or brands and find which one is genuinely cheaper.
Supermarkets and retailers often display unit prices on shelf labels, but they're easy to miss, inconsistently formatted, and sometimes deliberately confusing. A dedicated unit price calculator cuts through the noise instantly.
How to Calculate Unit Price
The formula is simple:
Unit Price = Total Price ÷ Quantity
Example:
- 500g of pasta for £1.20 → unit price = £1.20 ÷ 500 = £0.0024 per gram (£2.40/kg)
- 1kg of pasta for £2.10 → unit price = £2.10 ÷ 1000 = £0.0021 per gram (£2.10/kg)
The 1kg bag is cheaper per gram, even though it costs more upfront.
Using the ToolNest Unit Price Calculator
The unit price calculator lets you compare up to 4 products side by side:
- Enter the price — Type the total price for each product
- Enter the quantity and unit — e.g., 500 g, 2 litres, 12 items
- See the comparison — The calculator shows unit price for each and highlights the best value in green
No mental arithmetic required. Works for any unit: weight (g, kg, oz, lb), volume (ml, L, fl oz), or count (items, rolls, tablets).
Real-World Examples
Grocery Shopping
You're buying olive oil. Which is better value?
- 500ml for £3.99 → £7.98/litre
- 750ml for £5.49 → £7.32/litre
- 1 litre for £6.99 → £6.99/litre
The 1-litre bottle wins — but only if you'll use it before it expires.
Bulk Buying
Paper towels in three pack sizes:
- 4 rolls for £2.50 → 62.5p/roll
- 8 rolls for £4.80 → 60p/roll
- 16 rolls for £9.00 → 56.25p/roll
The 16-roll pack has the best unit price, but buying in bulk only saves money if you have storage space and won't waste product.
Medication and Supplements
- 30 vitamin tablets for £8.99 → 30p/tablet
- 90 vitamin tablets for £19.99 → 22p/tablet
- 180 vitamin tablets for £34.99 → 19p/tablet
The largest pack is 37% cheaper per tablet.
When Unit Price Isn't the Whole Story
Lowest unit price doesn't always mean best choice:
- Expiry dates — Buying 3kg of bread at a great unit price doesn't help if half goes stale
- Quality differences — Own-brand vs. premium products may have different ingredients
- Storage — Bulk buying requires space; factor in storage costs for businesses
- Cash flow — A larger upfront cost may not suit a tight budget even if it saves long-term
Use the unit price as one input, not the only input.
Unit Price Comparison for Businesses
Businesses buying supplies, raw materials, or wholesale stock use unit price calculators to evaluate supplier quotes. When a supplier offers "£450 for 200 units" vs. "£680 for 320 units", the unit price calculation instantly shows which quote is better value:
- £450 ÷ 200 = £2.25/unit
- £680 ÷ 320 = £2.125/unit
The second quote is cheaper per unit despite the higher total cost.
