Rock Paper Scissors is one of the oldest decision-making games in existence — and one of the most searched quick games online. Whether you need to settle a debate, pick who goes first, or just kill 30 seconds, it's the perfect zero-setup game.
How to Play Rock Paper Scissors
The rules are simple:
- Rock beats Scissors (crushes it)
- Scissors beats Paper (cuts it)
- Paper beats Rock (covers it)
- If both players choose the same gesture: Tie
Each round is independent — there's no memory between rounds unless you track score.

Is There a Winning Strategy?
Against a truly random computer, no strategy gives you an edge — every choice has an equal 33.3% chance of winning, losing, or tying.
Against humans, however, patterns emerge:
- Most people start with Rock on their first throw (it feels "strong")
- After a loss, people tend to switch to the gesture that would have beaten their opponent
- After a win, people tend to stick with the same gesture
- Scissors is thrown the least frequently
The most consistent human strategy: after your opponent wins with Rock, play Paper on the next round. After they win with Paper, play Scissors.
Rock Paper Scissors Lizard Spock
The extended 5-gesture variant popularised by The Big Bang Theory adds two new gestures:
- Lizard beats Paper (eats it) and Spock (poisons him)
- Spock beats Rock (vaporises it) and Scissors (smashes them)
- Original rules still apply for Rock, Paper, Scissors vs each other
With 5 gestures, ties are less frequent. It's a great variant for groups who play Rock Paper Scissors to settle recurring disputes — it feels more definitive.

When to Use Rock Paper Scissors
Beyond casual gaming, RPS is genuinely useful for:
- Deciding who goes first in any game (faster than spinning a wheel)
- Breaking ties in group decisions when the vote is split
- Fair task assignment — particularly when no one wants to do something
- Party games — tournament brackets with 8-16 players are surprisingly fun
RPS Tournaments for Parties
Turn Rock Paper Scissors into a party event by running a knockout tournament:
- Pair up all players (use the Random Team Generator to create bracket pairs)
- Each matchup is best of 3
- Winners advance; losers are eliminated
- Track progress on the Party Scoreboard
A 16-player tournament takes about 20 minutes and requires zero equipment.
